FAQ
-
Myofunctional therapy is a treatment that uses targeted exercises to retrain the muscles of the mouth, face, and throat. It improves breathing, swallowing, chewing, and tongue posture, which can help with conditions like sleep apnea, TMJ pain, and mouth breathing.
-
Myofunctional therapy benefits both children and adults. Common conditions treated include TMJ pain, teeth grinding (bruxism), tongue and lip ties, mouth breathing, tongue thrust, sleep apnea, snoring, and habits like thumb sucking. A complimentary screening can determine if you are a good candidate.
-
Yes. Myofunctional therapy is non-invasive and safe for children. It's especially effective for kids dealing with mouth breathing, thumb sucking, tongue thrust, or sleep disordered breathing like snoring, night terrors, or bed wetting. Exercises are age-appropriate and designed to be engaging so children stay motivated throughout the program. Parental involvement and encouragement play a key role in success.

The Myo Munchee is a silicone training appliance for children and adults that helps develop proper chewing muscles, lip seal, nasal breathing, and tongue posture. It features small silicone stimulators that massage gum tissue, aid in plaque removal, and increase saliva production. It's used as an early orthodontic trainer, a pacifier replacement, a teething tool, and a complement to myofunctional therapy exercises.

Buteyko Breathing is a method designed to improve health by teaching you to breathe slower, lighter, and through your nose. It uses nasal breathing, diaphragm, and breath-hold exercises to help normalize carbon dioxide levels in the body. It can help alleviate symptoms of asthma, anxiety, snoring, and sleep disordered breathing while improving sleep quality and energy. Myofunctional Wellness Center is launching Buteyko Breathing services in Spring 2026.
-
A typical myofunctional therapy program consists of 15-20 sessions over a 6 to 12 month period. Sessions are approximately 30 minutes, and patients practice assigned exercises 2-3 times daily at home between appointments.
